I’m from Texas, grew up near Austin, and I have a pair of amazing custom made cowboy boots from a famous craftsman* that I am too terrified to wear because I will lose my mind if I damage them.
The basic effect of danger being very localized was really jarring after the wildfire in Altadena. You could be on a street that looked like the middle of a Roland Emerich movie (fire fighters, National guard in their armored cars, literal flames and smoke) but drive ten minutes south and it was 100% normal - trendy cafes, hair salons etc
