Why did I bother with an op-ed when 'Keeping Up Appearances' just sitcommed it out?
The opening scene is a bedroom clock showing 5:42am. Hyacinth Bucket turns on her bedside lamp, driven awake—and soon to awaken husband Richard—by the realization that some people she knows have a vacation home in the countryside.
This is so perfect because it gets at precisely why Hyacinth wants them to get a country house as well. Someone else has something she does not. Something indicative of old-money status. This is unacceptable.
