That completely tracks. Bad Feminist was published in 2014, which means that I'd have been trying to publish a book right in that wave of underperforming essay collections. (I even remember being in a Barnes and Noble trying to figure out comp titles, where the similar books all were essay collections, but I had to say that was not what I was doing...)
