“The Mary Tyler Moore Show”
Best reruns. Best clothes. Mary, Rhoda, and Phyllis as three paths in 1970s womanhood. My theory is that this show Actually comes from a more progressive place than the one we live in now, but it’s been a while since I rewatched so I don’t remember exactly why.
“I Love Lucy”
The show itself may not always hold up but a young Desi Arnaz does. And also, the show is def canonical.
“The Bob Newhart Show”
Suzanne Pleshette, for the lady-likers. What’s she doing with Bob? I do like the bookshelf above their bed. Also neighbor Howard, forever innuendo’d as their third, b/c 1970s. How is he the exact same character as Hugo from “The Vicar of Dibley”?
“Frasier”
Sleep-inducing and class-focused like a British show. Sleepily rerun-ish despite being from not that long ago. As versus “Seinfeld” which I think might still be on the air, what is aging, what is time itself.
For the sitcom form, but minus the American-ness or the rerun-ness: Canadian show “Kim’s Convenience.” It has the feel of an old TV show, in a good way, and thank goodness without being a reissued version of an actual show from decades ago. Also one of the actors once said “so beautiful” in reference to my dog here in Toronto.
