I think there's a bit of a logical gap between "we are social creatures" and "therefore, you care about trends." We care about the opinions of other humans, but those other humans are only imperfectly aware of trends
Especially if you dress for men...it's more important to wear something that flatters your body than to be fashionable
She's what came to mind when trying to articulate why this isn't quite it. Because yes, there are ways women dress to indicate wanting male attention, but the 1992 version is not the 2012 one is not the 2026 one, plus subcultures, etc.
It's immediately visually clear in the context of the show that Rose is dressed for a male gaze, but a woman who dressed item-by-item like Rose today would look eccentric more than seductive.

The point about thrift shopping into current trends is spot on, I literally just did this with vintage 501s last month and everyone thinks they're new. Honestly the part about bodies changing with silhouettes was something I hadn't thoght about but makes so much sense.
