Bug off, Onslow
For actual honest-to-goodness years I have been obsessed with taking fashion inspiration from Keeping Up Appearances. All the characters. OK, most—I’ve never attempted The Daisy. Neighbor Elizabeth is best, but I am also partial to Onslow. So how thrilled I was to find an Onslow-worthy sweater vest at a local vintage shop. Sure, it had a couple holes here and there, and the wool was itchy, but you wear it over stuff (not much stuff if you’re actually Onslow) so what does it matter? First, before the story—which is too out-there for all but the most dedicated subscribers, sorry—the visuals:
Not unrelated, I go on kicks where I care about having natural-fiber clothes. I’ve settled on the idea that natural-fiber-seeming clothes should be made out of the expected material (i.e. no rayon “linen” slacks) but a fleece will be made of plastic and that’s fine. But sometimes I will be like, nope, those jeans aren’t 100% cotton? Forget it. And sure enough, thrift stores and vintage and consignment and the like, and Poshmark, let us not forget Poshmark, come through. Clothes aren’t made like the used to be, is the thing. It’s more eco-friendly and affordable and fashionable to buy used. I don’t want the newfangled poly-blends.
This will be relevant. More relevant than I wish, believe you me.
